Caring for Your Rose Bushes
Roses are universally revered as a symbol of love and romance. Many people regard a perfect rose bloom as the most beautiful flower and they are grown throughout the world and have been grown for many centuries. You too can have your own Romantic Rose Garden with just a few key tips on rose bush care and rose garden care. Soon you too can enjoy an abundance of glorious blooms in your garden.
Where to Plant your Rose Bush
There are an enormous variety of rose bushes and every day new varieties are developed. No matter what your taste is in terms of color or shape – there is a rose bush to suit you. It can be a little intimidating to consider which variety to plant or how to care for it, but here are some basics:
- Sunlight: roses love the sun, so you shouldn’t plant them in shady spots but look for areas of full sun in your garden – they need at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. Even varieties that are supposedly shade tolerant should still get at least four hours of sunlight each day.
- Space: to prevent disease and ensure that your bush has room to grow ensure that it isn’t going to be crowded out by other plants. Good air circulation will also help against mould and other diseases.
- Good Soil: roses also need good rich soil to grow in and so you should dig in a good amount of compost before you plant your rose bush.
- Water: roses require lots of water. Provide a good watering at least once a week.
Keeping Pests at Bay
Unfortunately, pests are a part of the plant world and roses do fall foul of some damaging insects. Scale insects, Rose midge larva, rose cane borer, caterpillars, Japanese beetles, stem girders, aphids, rose slugs, spider mites, thrips and of course rose chafers all love roses as much as you do. Once you’ve identified which insect is attacking your plant you can decide how to deal with the problem:
- Physically remove all the insects and kill them yourself. It’s important to remove the entire leaf that you see them on since they may have laid eggs.
- Use synthetic pesticides or chemicals, although I always encourage people to rather practice a more holistic organic approach. For example, you can make your own home-made insecticidal sprays using soap and water.
- Biological control: some insects are effective predators (eg. Ladybird beetles will eat aphids) and you should check with your local garden center to see if they can help in this regard. At some places you can buy ladybugs in bulk and then release them into your garden to help keep aphids at bay!
Trim Your Bushes
Pruning rose bushes is essential to get rid of dead canes and shape the bushes in the right way. It’s also important to cut the dead flowers off, known as “deadheading”. This is critical to encourage the plant to produce more blooms. If the old flowers are not removed, the rose bush will begin to set seed and stop producing any more flowering buds.
A romantic rose garden is truly a joyful thing for any gardener. With the proper care, your rose bushes can produce an abundance of glorious blooms almost all summer, bringing beauty and romance into your beloved garden.
